The organisers of Maldon’s notorious mud race look set to come to the rescue of the town’s festive celebrations.

For 26 years the Victorian Evenings were a regular feature in the lead up to Christmas, but they came to an end following the 2010 event, amid the withdrawal of support from a number of local businesses, who felt it was tired and had had its day.

Last year, a replacement community event, Making Maldon Magical, was organised by a community group including representatives of Maldon Town Council and local churches, and received a mixed reaction.

Now the Maldon Mud Race organising committee is looking to reinvigorate the Christmas celebrations and to get businesses back involved.

Allan Wiseman, chairman of the committee, said: “The town council approached us because last year was more successful than they thought it would be and they just want some help to do it.

“We are looking to do something similar to what we used to have with the Victorian nights.

“It was a shame really when they stopped, but things don’t stay the same forever.

“We are hoping to get the shops and everybody back involved, but we are going to have one night instead of two.”
