Parishes told to use precept as play area grant refused

DISTRICT councillors have told parishes to “use their own precept” to fund improvements in their villages and refused a grant application to improve a play area.

Members of the community services committee for Maldon District Council rejected community grant applications from Steeple Parish Council and Tolleshunt Major Parish Council at a meeting on Tuesday July 7.

Steeple Parish Council had requested £1,164.12 for a new parish notice board and agreed to fund 25 per cent themselves.

And council officers suggested a grant of £500 but members of the committee refused to give any money.

Tolleshunt Major Parish Council requested £4,000 for fencing, gates and access changes to improve safety. The parish has also applied for the remaining £7,965 from the Big Lottery Fund.

And, while councillor Alison Warr attempted to speak in favour of the play area improvements, members quickly rejected the officer recommendation for £500 funding and refused to give any money for improvements.
