A SCHOOL has helped to bring a popular orchestra back to the UK with a special community concert arranged for Maldon.
The Madeira Mandolins orchestra will be performing in the UK for the first time in seven years with the musicians coming on Saturday July 18 at 7.30pm at the town hall, Market Hill.
The concert will feature light classics from the likes of Vivaldi and Ketelby with the orchestra also perfoming with Portuguese tenor Carlos Cuilherme on a selection of numbers included O Sole Mio, Santa Lucia and Funiculi Funicula.
Plume School, Fambridge Road, got involved in the concerts as part of its performing arts specialist status which helps the school to lead the way in this area of education.
And organising events such as these helps the pupils, the school and the community and fulfils one of current headteacher David Stephenson’s ambitions that “schools should be at the centre of the community”.
The orchestra formed in 1913 making it one os the oldest Mandolin orchestra is Europe yet in terms of the musicians’ average age it is the youngest orchestra in the world - with the youngest member only seven-years-old.
