Seal health check fails and succeeds at the same time

AN unusual tourist has been enjoying the sights and sounds around Fullbridge and Maldon - and likes it so much it refuses to leave.

A seal, who has worried residents with concerns about its health, proved its flippers were still full of life as it evaded rescue efforts.

Members from the Essex Police Marine Unit and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue attempted to check the seal over but it was just too quick.

Marine Investigator Simon Lofting said: “We had reports from the last four months about a seal who was not looking too well so we went with the BDMLR to get it out and assess it. We ushered it down but it was too quick and we tried all day. There had been concerns about its health but it is not that bad as it was flying around.”

The BDMLR is a registered charity operated entirely by volunteers with a network of trained, professional marine mammal medics and survives entirely on donations.

I totally agree with Simon's assessment of this situation. I was one of the Marine Mammal Medics involved in this operation, we had recieved a number of calls from concerned public about this animal.

Seals can live with a burden of parasites usually Lungworm until the affects become too much for them. The seal at the moment however seems very feisty, wich is a good thing.

I'd like to thank Essex Marine Police for their help and assistance, they were great!
