Can you help track down carnival queen?

DO you remember this carnival queen?

As part of the celebrations for the 100th Burnham Carnival, the organising committee hopes to hold a reception for as many of the queens and princesses as possible on carnival day, Saturday September 27.

To help the carnival committee gather as many as possible, the Standard will be featuring photos of past carnival queens in the run up to the big day.

It is hoped that they - or someone who knows their whereabouts - will get in touch.

The first queen to track down is Janet Markham who was 20 when she was chosen for the prestigious role in 1970.

The programme from that year says she was an agricultural worker and lived in Winstree Road, Burnham.

However, she had only moved to the town from Wood Green, London, a fortnight previously and, according to carnival spokesman John Hindle, she lived in Burnham for less than a year.

"We have no knowledge about where she went and would love to find out," Mr Hindle said.

Her attendants were Lilian Chapman, 19, who was chosen for the second year running, and 16-year-old Rosemary Ives, from Glendale Road, who was a student.

The carnival pages were Corrine Davies and Anna Wallis, both nine-year-old pupils from St Mary's Primary School.
