Glorius mud race declared a success

MALDON got very messy as thousands gathered for one of biggest events of the year.

The Mad Maldon Mud Race saw crowds gather from all over the country, to watch or have a go in the infamous race, where people slip, slide and crawl their way to the finish.

This year's event was declared another success by organisers Maldon Rotary and Lions, featuring 181 runners watched by crowds of around 5,000 people, on Sunday December 30.

A number of colourful costumes did not disappoint spectators, from giant sumo wrestlers and whoopee cushion costumes, to prison stripes, Dr Who Daleks and viking hats.

The race started unexpectedly, after contestants mistook a countdown for a Mexican wave for the starting signal.

But it was not long before they were all knee-deep in mud and making their way across the course.

Newcomer Harold Wyber, 22, of Woodford, emerged as winner, finishing the race in three minutes and 38 Seconds.

Organisers are hoping to raise up to £30,000 from the race, for the Essex Air Ambulance, Little Havens Children's Hospice and the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity.

Race DVDs of the event will be available to buy, by contacting the organisers using the website www.maldonmudrace.com.
