I was disappointed to read the criticism of the Great War memorials erected on Maldon’s Promenade, the Hythe Quay and in Burnham.

I think they are a very poignant representation of the 100th anniversary of the end of the conflict and a timely reminder to us all of the huge human sacrifice from across our district and the wider Britain and former Empire.

I congratulate the district council members and, most importantly, the officers involved in making this happen (mostly in their own time).

I was privileged enough to be asked to write the scripts for the two stories linked to the listening post at the Promenade monument – one about young Ben Cobey, killed in action in 1914, and the other about Maldon’s Home Front.

I would urge any residents and visitors to listen to these brief stories because, at the end of the day, this is about those people and what they did for us and our freedom – not about who should and should not be invited to unveiling events.

If individuals and groups (including the Royal British Legion – of which I am a member) start arguing about the rights and wrongs of that trivial aspect, it does our war dead a gross disservice.
