PEDESTRIANISING the high street in Maldon is not a new idea.

The suggestion has been mooted on more than one occasion in the last ten years, but plans have never amounted to anything more.

Town and district councillor Michael Pearlman believes banning cars between West Square and Market Hill would help business in the town centre.

There is no doubt our high street would benefit from a boost, but traders and residents have differing opinions on what will work.

The business owners we spoke to say while pedestrianisation is a nice idea, parking is the real issue and tackling parking problems should be top of the agenda.

There are also questions on what affect it would have on the parts of the high street not included.

But Maldon District Council, who would be responsible for bringing any plan forward, says it is “not currently an option”.

Whatever happens this has opened up the debate about how we can support our high street and drive people to the town.
