SIMON Walton admits he has ‘a bit of catching up to do’ despite making a goalscoring full debut for Billericay Town.

The Yorkshireman scored in the 3-0 win at Welling United having been hampered by a hamstring injury for the first three games of term.

He was named Man of the Match following the win, which took Billericay to the summit of the National League South.

And the 30-year-old, who counts Leeds United, Plymouth Argyle and Hartlepool United among his former clubs, says he is feeling sharp ahead of tomorrow’s encounter with Weston-super-Mare.

“It was a frustrating start but I am back and feeling strong now,” said Walton. “I started pre-season and felt good playing the first few games but I got a little hamstring strain at Aveley and it wouldn’t go away.

“It wasn’t a tear but a niggle and I shouldn’t have played against Biggleswade Town and West Ham. I wasn’t training and the lads were doing well and I wasn’t ready to start.

“I was trying to get my hamstring back to full strength and after a frustrating spell I am back now. I have some catching up to do but I am up for the challenge.

“My first start couldn’t have gone any better really,” he added. “Welling were flying but we played well and deserved the points. There was a question about how long I would last and I was blowing a bit towards the end but I got through it.”

Weston sit second from bottom in the standings ahead of kick-off, with just one point to their name.

But Walton still believes they can pose Town questions.

“I know Weston have had a tough start and they will pose a different threat,” he said. “We need to equip ourselves well and if we do we can win.”

LOOKING AHEAD: Billericay Town are the early pacesetters in the National League South and will be looking to maintain that advantage when Weston-super-Mare visit tomorrow.

Three wins in four matches, the most amount of goals scored and just one goal conceded marks a superb start to the campaign for Harry Wheeler’s men following their promotion last term.

And they head into Saturday’s match against Weston as favourites because of it. Despite being in the second tier of non-league for almost 15 years, Weston are perennial strugglers and already find themselves in the relegation places.

The last time these two sides faced each other in the 2012/13 season, there was just one goal in both league encounters, that going the way of Weston. It seems likely there will be more than that this time around.

MANAGER’S VIEW: “There are no guarantees in football and we know this will be a tough game,” said Wheeler. “We have no divine right to beat anyone.

“Weston are a very good footballing side who play out from the back. They could well try and do that against us and we need to be prepared for that.

“It could work in our favour but we just need to focus on what we can control and try to win our battles and get what we want out of the game.

“We have a strong squad and with players coming into the squad it does make selection difficult. We welcome Ricky Modeste back, which is great for us, and we are all looking forward to the game.”

TEAM NEWS: Connor Hunte is still banned and Alan Julian remains sidelined, but Modeste returns.
