Thugs armed with a hammer threatened the homeowners during a burglary in Maldon.

Three men wearing black balaclavas forced their way into an address in Quest Place, Maldon, at around 2.30am this morning.

The occupants, a couple and their son, were inside at the time and were threatened by the men.

Detective Inspector Gary Biddle said: “The occupants of the house woke up to find the suspects downstairs.

“One of the burglars threatened one of the victims with a hammer before all three fled the scene.

“Fortunately the family – a man and a woman aged 45 and their 20-year-old son - were not injured, but were left very shaken.

“I am appealing for witnesses who saw what happened or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area.

“Any information, however small, could help us identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

It is not believed anything was stolen during the burglary.

The suspects wore balaclavas and gloves.

One wore a red jumper with black on the sleeves and black trousers. He was about 5ft 9ins tall and of medium build.

Another was shorter and wore a dark coloured hooded top.
