IT is the uphill traffic that causes most of the air pollution on Market Hill in Maldon, since it proceeds slower than the downhill traffic, and fairly often has to crawl or queue with engines running if there is congestion on the High Street.

This problem would be greatly lessened if Market Hill was made into a downhill route only.

A suitably narrowed entrance on the Market Hill side of the Fullbridge would restrict uphill traffic to access and emergency vehicles only.

This could be done similarly to the narrowing of Wantz Road where it meets Maldon High Street.

All other vehicles, ideally including buses, would have to go up the bypass instead - this after all must have been the idea when the bypass was originally constructed.

There might need to be additional traffic calming measures to the downhill route to prevent speeding and allow residents’ vehicles to turn in or out safely, but it should not be enormously costly.

It would be helpful to know how much it cost to implement the Wantz Road scheme.
