LOOKING AHEAD: Great Wakering Rovers’ first match back in the Isthmian North is one that could be significant come the end of the season.

Perennial strugglers Romford host newly-promoted Great Wakering, with both eyeing positive starts to this campaign at Rookery Hill, Romford’s home for the season.

Wakering were in stunning form towards the end of last season as they stormed to the Essex Senior League title and will want to use the confidence they gathered in that run at the beginning of this term.

The departure of Iain O’Connell three weeks ago rocked the boat, although Garry Kimble has come in and steadied the ship.

But will he have had long enough with his group before the big kick-off to assess his options?

MANAGER’S VIEW: “It may not be the worst match to begin the season with but, as last season proved, Romford can beat anyone,” said Kimble. “We need the right mental attitude and the players need to apply themselves in the right way. Everyone wants to win in the first game and we don’t want to lose.

“I have only been in two weeks and I would have wanted more preparation time but it is what it is. We are effectively playing at a neutral venue. It will be a good surface over there and we need the right application.

“We are not making up the numbers.

TEAM NEWS: Kimble is hopeful he will be able to choose from a full squad for the match.
