A FIELD fire has broken out near Maldon.

Essex Fire Service are attending an incident near Fambridge Road just to the south of the town.

It is reported that at least four fire engines are in attendance.

A spokesman for the service confirmed they were attending the incident and more updates would be posted shortly.

Update 3.53pm: The fire has been extinguished.

Six fire engines attended from Maldon, Chelmsford, Great Baddow and South Woodham Ferrers.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "On arrival, crews reported that around ten acres of standing corn were alight, along with approximately 200 metres of nearby hedgerow.

"Firefighters used a Pinzgauer (a vehicle with off-road firefighting capabilities) to help them contain and tackle the fire as quickly as possible.

"By 3.06pm, the fire was surrounded before being fully extinguished at 3.23pm. Firefighters remained at the scene for some time afterwards to dampen down remaining hotspots.

"The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental."
