AN action group dedicated to the upkeep of Maldon’s riverside areas has gone online as it appeals for new members.

Maldon Riverside Association was founded in April 1988 to monitor the developments that were affecting the Blackwater riverside, such as the decline in commercial shipping in the river.

The group has about 200 active members.

Despite this, the group has seen declining numbers in membership in recent years and is taking steps to prevent it from disbanding.

The group’s annual meeting was held on May 2 where several new initiatives were announced to sway the membership decline.

Noel Probyn, chairman, said: “If you stand on the Hythe and look around at the riverside forest of masts, the ship and boat building yards and the natural beauty of the riverside then you know it’s vital that we help to maintain it. Action is needed to reach out to more people who have a stake in the riverside.

“In addition to increasing contact with our friends in traditional media and our members, we are setting up a Facebook page and have gone online with a smart new website.”

The group has carried out many activities.

Last year, members carried out a mass litter pick along the seawall between Fullbridge and the bypass bridge, where 30 bags of rubbish were collected with the aid of Maldon District Council.

Among the many aims of the group, their key initiatives include providing a voice for members with proposals concerning the riverside, engaging the riverside community in commenting on planning applications relevant to the riverside and to resist any proposals which might diminish the amenities already existing in the area or which might pollute the environment.

They also produce monthly newsletters about their activities and the state of the riverside in Maldon.

As part of their new plans to reach out, the group plans to attend the Blackwater Country Show on Sunday and the Maldon Town Regatta in September to help recruit new volunteers.

Mr Probyn said: “This is an event where you can meet the team, learn more about our aims, and discover the benefits to the community by joining us and playing an active role in preserving Maldon’s unique waterside.” For information call 07889 013 886 or visit maldonriverside.co.uk.
