RESIDENTS are invited to have their say on how dogs should be controlled in the district’s parks and cemeteries.

This week, Maldon District Council has launched their public consultation into the creation of new public space protection orders for dog control in the region.

The 12-week consultation puts several options to residents; maintaining the existing district-wide protection order making it an offence to not pick up after a dog, and provide authorised offices the power to request specific dogs are kept on leads should their behaviour be dangerous.

Other options are making it an offence for any dog to be off its lead in certain areas, including Maldon, Heybridge and Burnham cemeteries and areas of Promenade Park and Riverside Park, and extending the existing dog free zones in children's play areas to sports pitches such as tennis courts.

A council spokesman said: “Our objective is to create a balance between dog owners enjoying their dogs and ensuring their welfare and others enjoying public spaces free from irresponsible dog ownership.

“Therefore, it is imperative that we receive responses to the consultation from dog owners and non-dog owners alike.”
