CALLS have been made to re-sand Burnham’s beach.

Burnham Town Council has been contacted by a life-long town resident asking if they would consider looking into plans to introduce fresh sand to the beach on the east side of town.

At a town council meeting on Tuesday, council clerk Sarah Grimes said: “The council has been contacted by a lifelong Burnham resident, stating how the beach of the town used to be a lovely place to spend time.

“They have requested the council look into funding for fresh sand to be laid on the beach to give it some renewed life.”

Councillor Nick Skeens was very enthusiastic about the idea.

He said: “The state of the beach is in part because of the dredging taking place to clean the waters, but I do think we should look seriously look into getting more sand on the beach, it hasn’t been done for a long time.

“There are many issues and there are going to be costs involved, but when it was in its prime it looked wonderful and is a vital tourist aspect to the town which encouraged many to visit here.”

Councillor Bob Calver stated much research would be needed before plans could be considered.

He said: “We need to find out how long the dredging will last, what effect this will have on the beach afterwards.

“We must also bear in mind that to replenish the sand, we would need a marine license application to be approved.”

The council decided they would liaise with the Crouch Harbour Authority to determine how to proceed.
