Delegates from across the country visited the new Bradwell B power station site as part of a national conference on nuclear power.

Maldon played host to the New Nuclear Local Authority Group’s (NNLAG) annual event.

The location was chosen because of the ongoing plans for a new power station, being led by EDF Energy and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN).

Simon Walsh, cabinet member for waste and environment at Essex County Council, said: “The potential development of Bradwell B is very significant for the Maldon District, the wider county of Essex and the East of England.”

Representatives from EDF Energy and CGN attended the event alongside Stephen Speed of the Civil Nuclear and Resilience Directorate and John Devine from the Department for International Trade.

Jim Crawford, Deputy CEO for Bradwell B, said: “The proposed Bradwell B nuclear power station is in the very early stages.

“Before our plans can be developed we are undertaking investigative works to better understand the site.

“After several years, and following detailed public consultation, we plan to apply for development consent to the UK Planning Inspectorate.”

The proposals for the new Bradwell B reactor have already passed the first of a four-step process and will be assessed by UK nuclear regulators.

This process is expected to take five years.

Step one was preparing the design, safety and security submissions.

The following steps involve developing the design, safety and security aspects.

The NNLAG aims to share knowledge, information and best practice regarding new nuclear projects including the one suggested for Bradwell.
