BUILDERS in Burnham have been slammed by residents for leaving one of the main roads in the town caked in mud.

Developer Charles Church is building 180 homes on land near Southminster Road, which was first approved in May 2016.

Construction got underway last year and now residents have called out the house builder for not cleaning Southminster Road after the street was left covered in mud by lorries leaving the site.

Una Longson, of Station Road, regularly uses Southminster Road.

She said: “My partner and I travel the stretch of the Southminster Road, by Ormiston Rivers Academy, a few times a day and we have only seen the cleaning lorry out twice in the past two to three months that they’ve been building, plus people with brooms twice, the latter of which is very ineffectual.

“I have complained in person and made a complaint to Essex Highways, yet still this is the state of the road. It may take a serious accident to get this company to take their responsibilities seriously.

“I’ve honestly seen less mud and mess from farm vehicles than what’s splattered over Southminster Road.”

The issue was brought up at a Burnham Town Council meeting in January, where councillor Wendy Stamp told members she had received numerous complaints from residents about the road being dirty, with no effort made to clean the vehicles’ wheels.

Members agreed that the council will make representations to Charles Church that raised concerns about the level of mud on the roads surrounding the development.

Charles Church was contacted but did not respond to requests for comment.
