Health bosses are set to be quizzed on Maldon’s GP crisis at a meeting next week.

Maldon District Council’s overview and scrutiny committee is due to ask a dozen questions on the problems surrounding GP recruitment and closed lists on Wednesday.

Representatives from the Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group and the Blackwater and Longfield Medical Centres are expected to attend.

Both GP surgeries informed the clinical commissioning group they would not be taking on new patients in August 2016.

More than 18 months later the lists remain closed.

The report, which was published ahead of the meeting, said: “The Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and two Maldon GP practices have confirmed that they will be sending representatives to the meeting to respond to the Committee’s questions on the subject.

“They have been informed of a number of potential questions that the Committee may like to ask.”

Questions include asking for answers over whether there are options for people who can’t join a surgery due to the closed lists, the reasons for the lists closing and how many vacancies there are for doctors across the district.

Other questions discussed what strategies were in place to tackle the problem.

The meeting comes after Maldon MP John Whittingdale raised the issues in parliament.

Mr Whittingdale asked health secretary Jeremy Hunt for support during a debate on new medical students.

The government is offering 1,500 extra medical training places, which Mr Whittingdale believes could help Maldon’s GP surgeries.

The meeting will be held at the council offices in Princes Road, Maldon, on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
