Essex Senior Cup fourth round

A FIVE star second half display from Concord Rangers saw Aveley swept aside in the Essex Senior Cup.

Femi Akinwande scored twice, with further goals from Steve Cawley, Khale Da Costa and Billy Roast – with all scored in a 17 minute spell.

The home side started well, with Jack West and Sewa Marah coming close for the underdogs.

But Concord were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead inside seven minutes. Alex Stephenson fouled Akinwande in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Steve Cawley but Rhys Madden guessed correctly and pushed the ball away.

Away stopper Louis Wells was called into action by Jordan Watson’s low drive, but there was little between the two teams.

The same man was beaten by Alex Teniola’s right-footed curling effort just before the half hour, although the ball flashed inches past the post as Aveley continued to press.

Into the second half, Wells made amends from a poor goal-kick as he fielded Teniola’s fierce shot.

And five minutes later Concord were ahead. Just shy of the hour, neat play down the left saw the ball worked across the penalty area, Da Costa playing the final ball back to Cawley who swept home.

Concord were getting into their stride. Ben Greenhalgh was prevented from doubling the lead by Madden’s legs before the second goal arrived.

Kyron Farrell worked space down the left and cut back for Akinwande to blast inside the near post.

The hosts were struggling to match their counterparts. After Greenhalgh’s backheel had been cleared off the line, neat footwork by Da Costa inside the penalty area saw him escape his man and finish smartly.

Roast headed a fourth with 15 minutes remaining, while Akinwande converted a penalty he won just three minutes after as Aveley capitulated.
