WALKERS and runners put their best foot forward as they took on a mammoth 75 mile challenge.

More than 150 competitors competed in the annual Saltmarsh75 across the Maldon and Dengie coastline at the weekend.

Those taking part set off from Marsh Farm in South Woodham Ferrers on Saturday morning.

The first day saw a dry start and everyone made good progress along the River Crouch towards Burnham before embarking on the 13 miles stretch around to Bradwell-on- Sea and then Steeple.

Those still out past 4pm also had to contend with heavy rain, strong winds and the fast approaching darkness.

On Sunday more than 100 people lined up again for a further 35 miles.

They headed first towards Maldon before turning north east towards Tollesbury and the final finish line at Salcott.

A spokesman for Maldon District Council said: “The good weather and dramatic tides where not enough to bolster everyone and many were forced to retire along the way. “

After a total of 11 and a half hours running Colin Harper was the first individual to cross the finish line.

To add to this accomplishment, Colin is one of only five people to have completed the Saltmarsh75 five times, along with James Haskey-Jones, Andy Layley, Gavin Brown and Javier Rubio.

The runners were supported over the weekend by Rover Rescue, RAYNET, EDMS (First Aid Support) and even the Goldhanger Sailing Club safety boat.

The spokesman added: “We would like to thank all the supporters and spectators who came out to watch and cheer.”

Results for everyone who took part on the day are available at Racetek-live.
