MALDON’S annual regatta returns to Hythe Quay next weekend.

The full-day event, which will see a host of traditional and modern yachts racing up and down the River Blackwater will take place next Saturday.

Old gaffers, smacks and yachts will race up the river from West Mersea to Osea and from there back to Maldon in a second race before berthing at the quay.

The regatta has developed into a key date in Maldon’s calendar, celebrating the history of the town and the fine boats that are still used at the quay today.

The first race begins at 8am, with large and small smacks and bawleys setting off, with the modern and classic yachts setting sail shortly after at 8.10am.

Shore events with stalls and activities on Hythe Quay start at 11.30am and run throughout the day.

There will also be crabbing, the rubber duck race, a crew party and this year sees the return of the boat jumble.

Shanty singers will take to the stage at 3pm and the prize giving draw will be held in the Sail Loft Boatyard from 5.30pm.

There is live evening music from 8pm where people can dance the night away on the quayside.

The regatta, which supports town charities, is free for spectators.
