A PARK memorial shelter will get a new roof after bagging a £5,000 grant.

The Friends of the Prom in Maldon was awarded the cash from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme.

The cash will be used on a project to put a canvas roof on the steel frame at the Queen Mother Memorial Area in Promenade Park.

The Tesco grant also allowed new planters to be built with the help of the parks team.

Friends of the Prom were delighted to get a grant to complete the memorial area which has sat unfinished for years.

Michael Brady, vice chairman of Friends of Prom Park said: "At the moment there is a half mile walk along the prom but there is no shelter.

"The elderly or not so able people may be deterred from wandering down there in anything but very still weather - if it starts to rain there is nowhere to go."

Mr Brady said said walkers would now have a point of refuge and it is hoped the shelter can be used for music and arts.

He added: "We hope it can double as a bandstand or a venue for the arts.

"We are very grateful and would like to thank everyone who thought it was a good cause and voted."

An official reopening will take place at 11am on September 19.

The Bags of Help initiative sees money raised from the 5p bag levy handed out to community groups.

Lindsey Crompton, Tesco’s Head of Community, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from our customers. The great thing about Bags of Help is that local people are invited to decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”

Voting ran in stores throughout January with customers choosing which project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the check-out.

Since launching in 2015, Bags of Help has awarded more than £27 million across more than 3,500 local projects.
