MAY I thank Alex Jennings for his comments and for his enquiry in last week’s Standard.

He recalls seeing an airship above Silchester in “1932/34” and wonders if it was the R100. I can confirm that it was not.

After the disastrous crash in France of R101 on the 5/10/1930, sister ship R100 was grounded and eventually broken up for scrap in November 1931.

It is likely to have been a military airship out of nearby RAF Farnborough.
