A CHAPEL in Bradwell could feature in a £600,000 art project.

The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, in Bradwell on Sea, is one of a number of sites that has been put forward to benefit from the New Geographies project.

The scheme is being run by the East Contemporary Visual Arts Network and has been supported by Arts Council England, with £600,000 of funding.

The project is on the lookout for “overlooked and unexpected” places in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The final ten sites selected will then have a site specific piece of artwork commissioned for them that will help create an art trail across the East of England.

As well as the chapel, the Petrified Forest in Mundon has also been put forward as a possible site.

Donna Lyans, Director of Ecvan, said: “The idea is for us to create a new map of the East of England, one based on personal thoughts and reflections rather than historical or economic centres.

“Any location will be considered, and if selected artists will respond to these places by making work that will be sited in each of the locations.

“We hope these new commissions will be enjoyed not only by the people and communities that nominated them, but also bring visitors who will be able to explore the East of England through this new map of ideas and reflections.”

Hedley Swain, area director for Arts Council England, added: “I look forward to seeing many more people of all ages and backgrounds getting out to see contemporary visual art, and perhaps being inspired as artists themselves.”

There is still time to nominate other locations in the area, with entries closing on October 22.
