BEAUTIFUL babies and toddlers filled out a hall to be named Maldon’s bonniest baby at the biggest show in years.

The annual Bonniest Baby competition, part of Maldon Carnival week and sponsored by the Standard, was held at Lower Plume School on Wednesday.

Entrants ranged from newborns up to two years old.

After the judges whittled down the contenders to just 12, Maldon Mayor Jeanette Stilts was asked to pick the winner.

The overall winner was eight-month-old Amelia Still who had been named bonniest girl in the six to 12 month category.

Mum Jenny Hull, from Maldon, said it was a complete surprise.

“We were all welling up,” she said. “I am very shocked she won – of course I think she is beautiful.

“I am very proud. My mum entered me when I was a baby and I won my category but I didn’t win overall.

“My friend Nicki found it on Facebook and I thought it is a bit of fun we will give it a try.”

Mayor Jeanette, admitted it had been a difficult task to choose the winner.

She said: “All babies are beautiful and to try and picking the overall winner was going to be hard.

“I went for the one with the biggest smile at the time.

“It is nice to see so many people supporting our carnival as so much effort goes into it.”

In total there were 25 entrants and organiser Sarah Haylock said the day had been fantastic.

She said: “I am really grateful for all the support we get.”

Carnival chairman Rob Slight added: “This is one of the oldest parts of the carnival – it is as old as the carnival.

“Everyone enjoyed the day, the bonny baby competition has always been a popular event.”
