MORE than 140 people were caught speeding through a village in the space of two hours.

Police carried out a speed check between 6.15am and 8.30am in Maypole Road, Wickham Bishops on Thursday last week. They recorded an astonishing 147 vehicles speeding, most of them coming into the village from Heybridge.

One vehicle was doing 51 mph; most were over 40 mph. All drivers concerned will now be subject to police action which could include speed awareness courses or a fixed penalty fine, plus points or prosecution through the courts with higher fines, more points or possible disqualification.

The Community Speedwatch Team in Wickham Bishops carried out four one-hour speed checks on the same road in the village on various days and at different times in the day and evening last week.

This resulted in 46 vehicles being reported to the police for follow-up letters to be sent to the registered keepers.

Ian Wardrop, Wickham Bishops parish councillor and Community Speedwatch Coordinator, said: “The Community Speedwatch Team has been and continues to be very active in the village, covering a number of sites on the three main roads into the village as well as sites within the village itself.

“The Parish Council and the speedwatch team are grateful for the support given by police in the efforts to reduce speeding through the village.”
