A MASTERPLAN to regenerate parts of Hythe Quay is set to be abandoned just months after its launch.

Maldon District Council unveiled plans for a major transformation project across Maldon and Heybridge earlier this year.

Among the plans were an iconic bridge over the River Chelmer, outdoor dining on High Street but the centrepiece of the project was due to be an expanded marketplace along Hythe Quay.

Following a public consultation the focal point of the scheme is set to be scrapped and all reference to it removed.

A report, due to go before the council’s planning and licensing committee states only 58 people responded to the consultation and 43 per cent of those “strongly disagreed” with the suggestion the marketplace would enhance the enjoyment and experience of Maldon’s waterfront environment.

Instead residents claimed a marketplace would block access, restrict views, damage the working quay and spoil the much loved atmosphere along the historic waterfront.

The report states: “69 per cent of respondents disagree with the council’s statement and respondent’s comments relate predominantly to project four, the Hythe Quay improvement initiative and the location of kiosks on Hythe Quay.

“As a result, regarding the waterfront environment, members should consider revision to remove kiosks from Hythe Quay.”

The committee is advised to remove plans for a food market, references to the market and take it off the front cover of the masterplan.

Council leader Mark Durham said: “This summer members will be looking to finalise the Maldon and Heybridge central area master plan and implement plans for the next 15 years which will shape the area. Detailed work will look at new facilities on and around the Promenade Park and Hythe Quay.

“In addition, the council continues to allocate capital spend to maintain or upgrade existing facilities, including an investment of £275,000 in Promenade Park.”
