A WALKING rugby scheme has been launched in the district to try and tackle inactivity.
The sessions are open to men and women of all ages and is led by Maldon Rugby Club every week at Drapers Farm Sports Ground, in Drapers Chase.
The walking rugby sessions are non-contact and are adapted to cater for all backgrounds and level of experience.
Councillor Bob Boyce MBE, chairman of the community services committee, said: “Walking sports are growing in popularity as they give participation opportunities to so many people in the community no matter what your ability is.
“It is great to see a family orientated local club encouraging and engaging with people to help provide this.”
The sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at 7pm and Saturday mornings from 9am.
The scheme not only provides health and fitness benefits, but also offers the social aspect of meeting as a group.
Rob Hawkins, walking rugby coach from Maldon Rugby Club, said: “The current participants have already become noticeable more mobile and fitter from taking part in this walking sport.
“It has also been great fun and very enjoyable for all involved. We welcome more people to come and join in a fun and active walking sport.”
