A BID to build up to 27 new homes in a village has been rejected.

Outline proposals for 27 new homes on land between Brook Close and Strawberry Lane in Tolleshunt Knights were put forward by Wilkin & Sons to Maldon District Council.

The homes were pitched as an opportunity to “round off and complete” the village envelope for Tolleshunt.

In their decision statement, the council said: “It is considered the proposed development would fundamentally alter the open character of the north western edge of the village of Tolleshunt Knights.”

A lack of affordable housing and flood risk were given as reasons for refusal.

Before the council’s decision, the project also faced opposition from Tolleshunt Knights Parish Council, who cited poor access from Brook Close, with 50 additional residents writing to object to the development.

A spokesman for Wilkins & Son said: “While we are disappointed with the decision, we continue to focus on securing our longterm future and continuing employment in the village.”
