JAM giant Wilkin & Sons has submitted plans to build 27 new homes in a village.

Outline proposals for the homes on land between Brook Close and Strawberry Lane in Tolleshunt Knights have been submitted to Maldon District Council.

Wilkin & Sons has put forward the bid as part of its plan to secure its future in Tiptree.

Last year the company announced plans to invest £15 million in its Tiptree factory over the next 15 years.

Wilkin & Sons said it “provides an opportunity to round off and complete the village envelope.”

Its planning statement said: “Tiptree is the largest village in Essex and is the home of Wilkin & Sons Ltd, an iconic global brand in manufacturing preserves.

“The company is embarking on a significant expansion programme which will see a complete refurbishment and upgrade of its facilities over the next 10 years, which will result in additional jobs.”

Chris Newenham, joint managing director, said: “In line with current plans to secure its long term future on site in Tiptree, Wilkin and Sons have recently submitted an outline planning application for 27 homes on land to the rear of Brook Close in Tolleshunt Knights.”
