BURNHAM residents are being asked to put forward ideas for how £20,000 could be spent on a special landmark for the town.

Maldon District Council had put forward proposals for a 21 metre sailing mast to be placed in Riverside Park.

But residents and councillors questioned the scheme, prompting the council to withdraw the application.

Instead they are now asking residents what kind of landmark they want to see in the park.

The scheme is part of the Dengie Gateway Project which has seen £330,000 ploughed into the Dengie area in a bid to make it a tourist trap.

Burnham resident Nick Gilmour has suggested the money would be better spent on a War of the Worlds inspired Martian sculpture, building on the Dengie’s involvement in the iconic novel.

The council is already making improvements to the park’s car parking paths and signage.

Three visitor information points are being installed at the station, quay and the park to help visitors navigate the town.

Ron Pratt, chairman of the community services committee said “The council is making a significant investment in Riverside Park, including addressing issues with the car park and paths.

“I would encourage anyone with a good idea to use this opportunity to tell the council what they would do.”

Ideas should be deliverable for £20,000 with costs needing to include scope for installation and any operational or maintenance costs for the next few years.

The scheme is for a permanent attraction and that will promote the area to visitors.

To submit your idea fill out the consultation at www.maldon.gov.uk/consultations.

The consultation will run for four weeks.
