MORE than 1,000 people made use of Burnham’s Tourist Information Centre in the first three months after it reopened.

The centre, on High Street, was reopened in August after almost a year away from the town.

The previous information centre, in the former One Place community centre also in the High Street, closed in October 2015.

An update on how the new site has been fairing is set to be given to councillors on the planning and licensing committee on Thursday.

The office is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and has two part time members of staff.

A report, by director of customers and community Richard Holmes, said Saturdays and Tuesdays were the busiest days of the week with 1,161 visits made in the 65 days of trading since it opened.

It said: “The centre has received significantly more overseas visitors than Maldon during the three months, including four separate groups on visitors from the USA and Canada.

“Staff have reported that they have noticed a difference since the sailing and caravan parks closed for the season.

“The team have also noted a large number of customers live in London during the week and come to Burnham for the weekends.”

The report found the majority of enquiries made at the centre related to history and heritage.

Mr Holmes’ report added: “To this end, the team have created a town trail with assistance from local historian Margaret Smith and the Burnham Museum.

“Currently in production with the in-house graphic designer, the intention is that this new guide will be ready in time for spring and the new visitor season.”
