A CORNISH music band will be performing in Maldon on Thursday.

Formed in 2014 by songwriters Tanya Brittain and Sam Kelly, The Changing Room have endured rising success in their writing of songs in the English and Cornish language, and have won multiple awards.

They will be bringing these songs to The Blue Boar Hotel in Maldon on Thursday from 7.30pm.

The founders Sam and Tanya will be joined on stage by Jamie Francis, Evan Carson and harpist Morrigan Palmer-Brown playing their rootsy, Celtic-infused original folk music.

Heavily influenced by the industrial heritage of Cornwall, the Looe-based band are ambassadors for collaboration and social singing.

Their songs feature rousing choruses and catchy hooks that will keep people swaying and humming all week.

Accordion, guitar, bodhran, harp and banjo plus award winning vocals deliver a winning combination, and unique sound.

In the short time that they’ve been recording together, The Changing Room have built up a significant catalogue of music, and clocked-up some impressive airtime on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 3.

They have also won multiple awards in their short time performing, having won Kan rag Kernow 2015 and the International Pan Celtic Song Contest 2015.

Sam also won the Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2016.

Since formation, they have released two EPs and two full length albums.

The band performed at Celtic festivals in Cornwall, Ireland and Brittany in 2014 and 2015 and completed a first national tour of arts centres and folk clubs last winter.

Nicola Esson, from macTheatre, said: “The Changing Room have been going from strength to strength. I think the work they produce is incredibly important in our current climate.

“Steeped in the language and heritage of the Cornish people they are reconnecting the working relationship between the land and the people who live there giving future generations a strong connection to their roots.

“This is the inspiration and source of the writing which is the backbone of the songs. It’s fantastic that we are part of this tour.”

The gig will begin at the hotel on Silver Street on Thursday from 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.
