A MEMORIAL darts tournament will be held next Friday to commemorate a “true countryman” who sadly died in a traffic accident.

Philip Gunfield, from Tiptree, died in September last year when a lorry collided with his tractor on the A13.

As Philip was a keen darts player, his family wanted to create an annual darts tournament in his memory to raise money for Essex Air Ambulance.

Moir Gunfield, Phillip’s daughter-in-law, said the event will be a “fitting tribute” to Phillip’s name.

She said: “It feels extremely fitting to be supporting Essex Air Ambulance after their efforts to try and save Phil.

“Luckily we got to meet the crew and one of the paramedics was actually part of the land ambulance crew who tended to Phil at the scene.

“You truly don't appreciate such a service until you need it. Unfortunately, Phil's injuries were such that they couldn't save him, but they tried and his chances would have been less if they were not available.

“Phil played darts for two teams on a regular basis and it was very fitting to create an annual event in his memory. He played out of The Anchor in Tiptree and worked the land all his life and was a true countryman.

“Our trophy has been made from oak and yew by my neighbour, Jake, and it’s so fitting. It even has Phil's darts incorporated within the trophy.”

The tournament takes place this Friday at The Anchor on Station Road, Tiptree, with registration from 7pm for an 8pm start, £5 entry for each pair with all funds going to Essex Air Ambulance.

Raffle tickets are also available to buy at £1 strip by contacting Moir on 01621 744333.
