BURNHAM’S Tourist Information Centre returned to the town after almost a year away last week, and was officially opened at a ceremony on Thursday.

The Centre, found on the High Street, was opened by Councillor Peter Elliot, Chairman of Maldon District Council.

Speaking to the crowd, Councillor Elliot said: “Burnham and the Dengie has a lot to offer visitors, with its rail link to London and rich sailing heritage it has been a well-loved destination for those in the know for many years.

“With the development of RSPB’s Wallasea Island, Burnham will have a new landmark attraction on its doorstep. As the Wild Coast project develops we hope to be well placed to welcome visitors for many years.”

Councillor Elliot was joined at the opening by Councillor Penny Channer, chairman of the planning and licencing committee and by Burnham Town Mayor, Councillor Ron Pratt.

Councillor Channer spoke of the importance of tourism to the town’s economy saying: “Tourism contributes greatly to the areas prosperity and culture and we are working hard to create opportunities for continued economic growth and prosperity.

“But the TIC is not just for visitors, the Burnham TIC, like the Maldon TIC, will offer services and information to locals and visitors alike. I encourage you all to check out what is on offer.”

Councillor Pratt echoed his colleagues’ sentiments. He said: “Burnham and the surrounding Dengie area has a lot to offer and we want to make sure we are making the most of it.

“We have an enviable variety of excellent visitor attractions in Burnham and the Dengie which have been attracting visitors for many years and I hope, with the opening of this centre for many more years to come.”

The new Burnham TIC will be open Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday plus summer Bank Holidays from 10am to 3pm.
