A CEREMONY to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of The Battle of the Somme in the First World War will take place in Burnham this weekend.

Burnham Town Council are working with the Burnham branch of the Royal British legion to bring the ceremony of remembrance to Burnham War Memorial on Sunday.

The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the First World War, injuring and killing over a million soldiers, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

Friday July 1 will mark the official 100th anniversary of the battle, with a special service being held in remembrance as well as the ceremony at the memorial.

The ceremony will take place at the war memorial at 12 noon on Sunday.
