A WORLD renowned artist is being recognised at the Burnham-on-Crouch art trail.

Geoffrey Wickham lived in Burnham-on-Crouch from 1986 until his death in 2005, aged 85.

A collection of his works are set to be on display at his home studio in Burnham for the art trail.

Tracy Saunders, Burnham Art Trail co-ordinator, explained why Geoffrey’s works were being displayed eleven years after his death.

She said: “There are two reasons for this particular exhibition.

“Firstly, his wife, Akiko Fujikawa, is currently cataloguing all of his work and she has found she has a very large body of work at her disposal that could be put on display.

“Secondly, artists are sometimes more appreciated after they pass on sadly.

“Geoffrey passed away in 2005 and it takes a little while for artists to be recognised.”

Visitors to Geoffrey’s Chapel Studio, on Albert Road, will be able to see a wide range of the artist’s oil paintings and a collection of his Japanese print work, inspired by his time in Japan.

There will also be a mixture of his earlier work and some of his later pieces, which were painted by somebody else.

As Geoffrey’s eyesight began to deteriorate he employed a painter who he would instruct to paint for him.

The Chapel Studio exhibition will be open for all nine days of the art trail, from June 25 to July 3.

Entry is free to the public.
