HORSES went on a hungry night rampage in Southminster last week.

Residents of New Moor Close and New Moor Crescent were awoken by sounds of heavy footsteps and rustlings in their garden at around 2.30am on Friday April 23.

It was discovered that two white horses were freely wandering around the gardens, seemingly searching for food.

Melanie Cook, of New Moor Close, awoke to the sounds of bangs on her front door.

She said: “I woke up at first to a few knocks on the door, when I woke up again I looked out of the window and saw these two horses who had managed to wedge themselves into my front porch.

“My husband thought I was dreaming.”

After nearly eating a whole bin bag of rubbish, the horses proceeded around the street, leaving mess and hoof prints all over gardens.

Melanie added: “I had to leave them after a while as the police weren’t coming and I couldn’t stand watching horses all night. No one knows where they ended up.

“They were very tame and friendly and weren’t at all stressed, they just seemed to be very hungry.

“They might have been left behind by some travelling gypsies nearby, but I can’t be sure.”

The horses have now gone, but their origins remain a mystery.
