WORK to clear a site in Maldon to make way for the town's newest store has begun.
Lidl has started to work on the site in Station Road in readiness for building work to begin.
Councillors gave the 1,391 square metres store the green light in September and it is understood it will create 20 full time and 20 part time jobs when it opens.
Original plans for a shop on the site were rejected by the council and Lidl appealed the decision, however withdrew the appeal after the latest application was approved.
A Lidl spokesman said: “We are committed to bringing a Lidl store to Maldon and were delighted when planning permission was granted in September.
“Remedial works are currently taking place and we look forward to getting started on construction and providing additional investment in the form of up to 40 new jobs.
The planned appearance of the store
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”
The store is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
