ONE of Maldon High Street’s oldest pubs is to close for refurbishment.

Yan and Lorrain Fiddian are moving on from The Swan and owners Gray and Sons are on the lookout for new tenants.

The work will involve a complete refurbishment but no structural changes.

Liz Meer, of Gray and Sons, said it was not known how long the work would take.

The grade II listed building dates back to the late 15th century and is believed to be the second oldest pub in Maldon.

Chris Harvey, chairman of the Maldon and Dengie branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, said: “Hopefully they will get the right people in to revitalise it and get it back to what it used to be.

“It can be a place where people can go to eat and socialise.

“They are going to do the work in phases and refurbish the bar and restaurant area. Then look to get long-term tenants in place and look at refurbishing the hotel rooms.”

Mr Harvey believes work will also be undertaken to improve the Bewick Suite function room at the pub.

He said: “Maldon really doesn’t have many function venues – there are not many around. There is the Blue Boar but that is really it.

“It is a lovely building and can become a great place for beer.”

The pub has a bar, restaurant, two function rooms and hotel rooms available for rent.
