WORK to repair Maldon’s Hythe Quay is expected to go over budget due to “unforeseen” additional repairs.

The quay was closed at beginning of October for 12 weeks to allow for the long-awaited works to be carried out.

In November 2013 the quay partially collapsed into the River Blackwater, and further damage was caused by a tidal surge a month later.

In August last year, Maldon District Council submitted a planning application for repairs which was approved last October.

But the council delayed the £350,000 work until last month, which meant part of the quay was closed to the public throughout the summer.

Now Maldon District Council’s finance and corporate services committee is set to consider agreeing to additional funds of up to £40,000 after it was found more work needed to be carried out.

The council’s planning and licensing committee has already agreed in principle to the additional cash being used.

A report set to go before the committee said there was insufficient funds to repair voids caused by tidal and ground erosion.

It said: “It has now been determined that this amount is insufficient to resolve the issue and the slumping has created a new issue that needs to be resolved.

“This will require an alternative technique to reinstate the Quay to its original (post war) level.”

The report added: “It has been established that as result of additional works, it is likely that the total project cost will be greater than the budget allows.”

It is not yet know how much the total costs of the project is likely to be.

The meeting will take place at the council offices in Princes Road, Maldon, from 7.30pm on Tuesday .
