Tourism is worth more than £182million to the district and supports more than 3,200 jobs.
Figures from Destination Research showed visitors came to the district for the "unique shopping and food and drink offer".
Maldon District Council (MDC) said the figures highlighted the importance of tourism in the district and support the continued drive to boost the appeal of the district.
Chairman of the community services committee, councillor Ron Pratt, said: "The Maldon district has a lot to offer visitors and it is good to see that the district continues to attract large numbers.
"The local tourism industry contributes greatly to the economic vitality of the district and we are proud to support it now and in the future.”
