A play area wrecked by vandalism, graffiti and fires has been abandoned by Essex Police, it is claimed.

Tiptree Parish Council installed the equipment at the Grove Road playing field after being advised by officers it was the best way to keep youths off the streets.

However vandalism, including graffiti and fires, is spoiling the area for young families and children.

Parish councillor Diana Webb said: “The police suggested the youngsters would be gathered in one place and the police could visit regularly and carry out checks.”

The council built a skate park, in efforts to provide young people with entertainment.

She said problems had previously been minor, but had escalated within the last month, including the use of laughing gas.

An Essex Police spokesman said the force had replied to a letter from the council.

The spokesman said: "Our patrols visit Tiptree and respond to resdents' concern and if any criminal offences are reported in relation to play areas then they will be investigated.

"We have a finite number of officers and must send them to the incidents where they can do the most good and be most effective."
