Long-serving stallholders feel “railroaded” as Maldon District Council threatens to axe their two-day market.

The council has faced a backlash from angry traders after suggesting the Butt Lane market should be done away with in favour of the High Street market.

In a council report it is noted: “It seems illogical to operate two markets, particularly when one (Butt Lane) only brings in a small income but uses 38 parking spaces.

A council spokesman said: “A decision on the future of the market will not be made until consultations on all markets has taken place.”
