ST MIRREN star Jim Hamilton would love to get to his second Scottish Cup Final in two years, but insists he won't start dreaming about that again until next month.

Hamilton hit two goals in the comprehensive 3-1 win over Irn-Bru Second Division Brechin to land the Paisley side a Homecoming fifth-round tie with Motherwell or Inverurie Locos.

And the veteran striker, who lost to Celtic in the 2007 final while at Dunfermline, sees no reason why Saints can't step up a gear on the road to Hampden, if they keep their focus in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League in the coming weeks.

St Mirren face Hibernian on Saturday and Hamilton is in no doubt the Buddies impressive recent form - that has seen them unbeaten in their last six games - will be derailed if the players lose focus.

"The most important thing about the Brechin game was that we got through," he said. "We were on a hiding to nothing and, for a while, they gave us a scare.

"In the end, we looked comfortable and we can look forward to the next round. I don't know who we will get there. People assume it will be Motherwell because they are the SPL side, but no top-flight side has been knocked out yet, so give Inverurie Locos the respect.

"But the most important thing now isn't the cup, it's the league. We are on a great run at the moment and we want to keep it going."

Saints will be bolstered by new signing Steven Thomson for the trip to Easter Road after the former Falkirk man made his debut in the win at Glebe Park.

Hamilton added: "It's good to get another member into an already strong squad. "Steven was an excellent player at Falkirk and he has a lot of experience.

"That can only be good for us and I'm looking forward to playing with him."
