Maldon residents were left fuming amid claims they were not given sufficient information about market road closures.

Elaine and Keith Pagan live in Gate Street Mews, which was one of the neighbourhoods affected by the road closure during Monday’s trial market in Maldon High Street.

They believe Maldon District Council should have sent out 300 or so letters to households affected by the road closure, including addresses in Silver Street, Coach Lane, Cromwell Hill and Beeleigh Road.

Mrs Pagan, 68, said: “I find how Maldon District Council have treated us is quite disrespectful.

“If you’re coming into Maldon from Heybridge, there’s a wonky sign from the Brooks Brothers roundabout and it just says March 9 top of the High Street closed.

“We only knew the market was happening because of this sign but I couldn’t really read it properly.”

Maldon Court Preparatory School in Silver Street was also affected by the road closures and given no notice by the council.

Councillor Mark Durham, chairman of the council’s Community Services Committee, said: “I am aware that concerns have been raised regarding traffic signage and some high street businesses have also been concerned at the siting of stalls and we will of course look at this but I hope that the High Street business will also see how this weekly market can bring an increase in footfall to the town and ultimately benefit their businesses."
