The battle to save NatWest from closure continues as nearly 1,000 people have signed petitions.

Lead campaigner Anthony Steel distributed petitions throughout Burnham’s shops in opposition to the closure of NatWest on March 18.

He has since collected them all in and counted a total of 940 signatures.

The retired consultant surgeon, who has banked with NatWest since he was 17, questioned what the next step of the campaign would be when he spoke at last Tuesday’s Burnham Town Council meeting.

Mayor Ron Pratt said: “I am pursuing it, but I’m pursuing it with a heavy heart.

“I don’t think we can force a business to stay in the town.”

He also told Mr Steel that if 3,200 signatures can be collected, the matter would be debated at district council level.

NatWest has confirmed that it will NOT be leaving an ATM or providing a mobile banking service following the branch closure in the High Street.
