Detectives have issued a new warning about a bogus water board official who called at seven homes in one day.

The man is also being linked to at least two similar crimes in Brentwood earlier this month.

The latest incidents were on Saturday October 18 at five homes in Buckhurst Hill, one at Epping and one at Waltham Abbey.

In each case the man claimed to be from the water board and said he was checking taps after work on water mains in the area.

Residents at six addresses became suspicious, and either refused to let him in or watched the man constantly while he was in their homes.

But after he left the address in Waltham Abbey the elderly resident discovered that her purse, cash and jewellery had been stolen. Police believe that an accomplice sneaked into the property while the victim was distracted.

Investigating officer DC Stephen Baker said: "In all seven cases the victim described how the suspect appeared to be smartly-dressed and well spoken. One person believed that he might have been educated at a grammar school.

"Although he gives the impression of being friendly and charming he was ruthless enough to take cash and other items from the elderly victim at Waltham Abbey.

"This man should not be trusted and if he arrives on your door and gives a story about checking the taps do not let him in and call police as soon as possible.”

The suspect has been described as being white, about 6ft tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a grey tracksuit.

Anyone with information about the man should contact DC Baker or colleagues at Loughton CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
