An inquest has been opened into the death of a motorcyclist.

Eric Hodkinson, 72, died after colliding with a Volkswagen caddy van on Blois Road in Steeple Bumpstead at about 1.20pm last Thursday.

Senior Coroner Caroline Beasley Murray, who opened the inquest at Chelmsford Coroner’s Court yesterday, heard how Mr Hodkinson, of Bicknacre, was with a group of other motorcyclists when he crossed over into the opposing carriageway on the approach to a tight, right hand bend, and collided with the van travelling in the opposite direction.

He was declared dead at the scene by the air ambulance crew.

His death was declared non-suspicious and the cause of death was given as multiple injuries due to trauma.
